What are Omega 3 Fatty Acids? |
A: |
Omega 3 Fatty Acids (part of a family called EFAs or essential fatty acids along with Omega 6 and Omega 9 Fatty Acids) are made up of three different fatty acids. ALA or alpha linolenic acid, EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid and DHA or docosahexaenoic acid. The term "omega 3" describes the type of molecule. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to the body, but we can not manufacture them ourselves. We must get them from our diet or through supplementation. We should get a 1:1 ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s but commonly we get between a 1:10 to a 1:20 ratio. |
Q: |
Are Fatty Acids really healthy ? |
A: |
There is a difference in the types of fats you consume. There are saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Saturated fats are the "bad" fats. These fats are very dense and tend to be solid at room temperature. In the body, they don't break down and tend to clog arteries and stick to body tissue causing build up. Unsaturated fats are "good" fats. They are liquid at room temperature. Inside the body, they are easily processed and used by the body to help maintain function and for heart health. You need fats in your diet for good health. Omega 3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats and provide a whole host of health benefits including support for your heart, eyes, skin, brain function and immune system. |

Q: |
Can I get the same benefits from eating fish ? |
A: |
No. Most fish today are contaminated with heavy metals. It is recommended that you only eat a limited number of servings of the kind of fish that give you Omega 3 oils to limit your ingestion of these toxic metals. In order to get the levels of Omega 3 oils your body needs, you would need to eat far more fish than you could safely ingest or would probably want to eat even if it were safe to do so. Our Omega 3 oils are highly concentrated and purified to ensure any impurities or toxic metals are removed. And we start with fish from the deep waters of the Nordic Sea, a place known to be free of heavy metal pollution to begin with. |
